President Joe Biden will establish a national monument honoring Emmett Till, the Black teenager from Chicago who was abducted, tortured and killed in 1955 after he was accused of whistling at a white woman in Mississippi, and his mother, a White House official said Saturday.

Biden will sign a proclamation on Tuesday to create the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument across three sites in Illinois and Mississippi, according to the official.

The individual spoke on condition of anonymity because the White House had not formally announced the president's plans.

Thousands of people gathered at the church to mourn Emmett Till’s death in September 1955.

In Mississippi, the monument will include Graball Landing, believed to be where Till’s mutilated body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River.

The third site is the Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi, where Till’s killers were tried and acquitted by an all-white jury.

The monument will be the fourth Biden has created since taking office in 2021. »

When the speaker was asked about climate change and forest fires, he was ready with a response: Plant a trillion trees.

A 2019 study suggested that planting trees to suck up heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere could be one of the most effective ways to fight climate change.

Planting one trillion trees would also require a massive amount of space — roughly the size of the continental United States. »

Cocaine dumped in the sea off Florida could have 'crazy' consequences if sharks eat it, scientists find

Authored by news.sky.com

Sharks may be consuming cocaine dumped in the waters off Florida and it could be making them act in "crazy" ways, scientists have said.

Marine biologist, Tom 'The Blowfish' Hird, and University of Florida environmental scientist, Tracy Fanara, studied sharks off the Florida Keys to see if the drugs were having any impact on them.

The biologist admitted many different factors could be responsible for the odd behaviour and the results don't necessarily show that sharks in Florida are consuming cocaine. »
