I was brought up in an extremely religious home. It was all I knew. I think things started seeming off to me when, at around 7 years old, at the store, I asked my mother "Is the lady in front of us going to hell because she has short hair?" She shushed me, and never talked about it again.

Over the years, it was hard to make friends because I'd invite them to church, (so they wouldn't go to hell) they'd see all the people screaming, and running around the church, and pretty soon they were not my friends anymore.

When I'd see someone "sinning" I'd judge them, and write them off.

It took me years to figure out how to be what most would call normal, and accept that everyone is different. I still wince when I think about the crap I've shoveled at people.

So yeah, freedom can seem bad if you've grown up in a cage.
