Picture-in-picture, otherwise known as video overlay, is a feature that’s available on many devices today where you can watch videos while doing other things. It’s similar to having a separate monitor dedicated to playing content while you do the more important stuff.

The only difference is it’s an integrated feature that works seamlessly so you don’t have to jump through several hoops to have a video playing somewhere else on your screen or another display without disrupting workflow.

This type of feature is used everywhere for productivity, education, and entertainment.

In Fortnite’s case, it’s a win-win situation that has plenty of potential for application.

According to Fortnite leaker, @HYPEX, Epic Games is working on a new “Picture-in-Picture” feature in-game that lets players link their accounts to other platforms and watch videos while playing.

@HYPEX adds that this will have an “Advert” widget. They speculate that TikTok could be one of the platforms added to the feature.

Picture-In-Picture Is Potentially a Massive Win for Fortnite

The datamined feature isn’t officially confirmed yet. And, while it may sound useless, it’s not.

Fortnite has evolved beyond the typical confines of the battle royale genre. It’s constantly growing and closer to becoming a legitimate metaverse. It’s now full of custom-themed content, including single-player modes and maps that, unlike the standard battle royale match, can have a slower pace.

In these instances, having a picture-in-picture feature to entertain gamers with only one monitor is a game-changing quality-of-life addition.

Epic dabbled with a similar feature with a picture-in-picture overlay of the 2019 Fortnite World Cup Finals. This way, players could watch professionals play Fortnite while playing Fortnite. This time, Epic’s new plans suggest a more robust application that lets you watch all sorts of things while playing.

Another potential application is with Fortnite’s concerts and season-ending events. It’s a lot easier to follow what’s going on without having to be on the front when there’s a video overlay covering the best parts of the event.

Of course, this would mean dealing with ads if you watch TikTok or YouTube while playing Fortnite. Otherwise, they’d lose money when you watch them in Fortnite. Besides, it wouldn’t make sense to exclude two of the largest platforms today out of Fortnite.

Ultimately, the success of this novel concept boils down to its execution.
