The gaming industry has substantiated a drastic shift in focus from traditional single-player games with proper endings, to an era of live service games. Games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and popular MMORPG titles exemplify this trend, offering immersive multiplayer experiences where the gameplay evolves continuously with regular updates and events.

As a result, traditional story-driven games, with their rich narratives, character development, and immersive storytelling, risk being overshadowed by the appeal of live games which offer endless replayability, social interaction, and a constant source of money for the developers and publishers. Kim Hyung Tae, director of the upcoming PS5 title Stellar Blade, laid a major emphasis on the importance of single-player console games with real endings.

“The Korean gaming market is very mobile-centric, so everyone is developing for smartphones,” Game Director Hyung-Tae Kim stated. “We felt a single-player console game with a definitive ending is still valid and still very important, so we’re hoping Stellar Blade will be a significant title that will encourage other Korean developers to see this as a starting point and be inspired for future projects,” he added.

Kim Hyung Tae expressed his concerns over the tragic issue of sales success due to the rising costs of development. He believes that variety is a prime virtue of the gaming industry along with a market where single-player titles such as “Stellar Blade” continue to co-exist with other genres.

“That’s why Shift Up will continue to take on the challenge of console games in the future. We have a strong desire to continue to create games that allow many gamers to enjoy to the end and return to reality feeling good,” he said.

Stellar Blade, a major entry in the PS5’s exclusive lineup of 2024 is set to release on Friday, April 26. The demo is already available on the platform and the gameplay has received thousands of positive reviews worldwide.

The title is based on a post-apocalyptic earth, and the protagonist “EVE” sets out to reclaim the Earth from the Naytiba – the sinister force that has devasted it.
