Fun thing I read these days on reddit: in modern german, these are called spitzmaus (pointy-mouse), which is missleading as they do not have much in common with mice.
So in 1942, some scientists wanted to correct this missleading name and revert it back to the old/traditional name, which appeared to be SPITZLER.
Adolf HITLER read of that in a paper and right away went nuclear on these scientists, literally threatening them with being sent to the eastern front / russia as builders/workers for the german offensive war.
I think that‘s hilariously descriptive of Nazi germany or dictators in general. On one hand, going back to the noble old germanic roots was what made the regime happy, but not anymore as soon as Mr. Führer would be somehow close in naming to a shrew. Lol.
