Lincoln third graders publish first book; ‘It has been my dream for a long time’

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A group of third graders at Saratoga Elementary School are now published authors after writing a book as a class.

For the project, the class researched some of their favorite animals, and each student got to write a page in the book.

They also drew their own illustrations of the animals.

Teacher Kris Jenkins said the kids learned about how animals are classified by different species, what they eat, and whether they’re warm or cold blooded.

Jenkins unboxed the books on Thursday and gave them out to the kids. There was even an extra book to keep in the school’s library.

One student, Remy Matthiessen, was excited to see the final product.

“I was really happy that I would finally get my book that I was waiting for a long time,” she said. “It feels really good, and it has been my dream for a long time to write my own book.”

Jenkins said the project has been weeks in the making, and she couldn’t be prouder.

She wanted to leave the kids with something they could keep and remember for the rest of their lives.

Jenkins said it’s important that kids know they have an adult in their corner.

“I try to foster that feeling every single day,” she said. “And they know that they come to school, and it’s going to be a positive learning environment. So, seeing their smiles, and them being so proud to read to the adults in the classroom the stories that they created, that’s what today is all about.”

I can't wait for his memoir, which only covers his early years, to be released next fall.
