Subsequent investigations revealed that on the last day of World War I, during the armistice negotiations in the railroad cars encampment at the Compiegne Forest, French commander-in-chief Marshal Foch refused to accede to the German negotiators' request to declare an immediate ceasefire or truce so that there would be no more useless waste of lives among the common soldiers. The failure to declare a truce, even between the signing of the documents for the Armistice and its entry into force "at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month", caused about 11,000 additional men to be wounded or killed – far more than usual, according to the military statistics.[

Germans wanted an immediate ceasefire when the armistice was signed at 5am. Its said the French wanted the 6 hour period before it was implemented. The deaths were unnecessary and a total waste
An estimated 11,000 died on the last day of the war from the time the armistice was signed pre-dawn to 11am. Perishing wanted a final victory and pushed the attacks when there was no benefit given the end was hours away and even had to justify the high toll of troops killed on that day to congress.
Thats a lot of families that could have had their sons come home including Sgt Gunther. For the last Frenchman, Augustin Trebuchon, killed minutes before the ceasefire, they list his date of death as 10th November on his gravestone as to not cause further distress to his descendants.
