The Lakehead District School Board has filed a court order application compelling Reddit Canada to release the identities of users who it claims have made defamatory remarks on the popular social media website

THUNDER BAY - The Lakehead District School Board is taking legal action against a social media site over posts it says are defamatory.

The school board has filed a court order demanding Reddit Canada disclose information to identify users who have made posts on the platform about the school board and staff.

The order would compel Reddit Canada to remove the posts from the platform.

According to the order application filed on Sept. 14, the grounds for seeking the identities of at least two users is related to posts made on Reddit earlier this year that the school board says are ‘defamatory and abusive.’

“The Users who made the above posts are unknown to the applicant at this time and their identity cannot be obtained from any publicly accessible source of information or any other source available to the applicant,” the order reads.

“This information is in the possession of Reddit, which is a corporation that owns and operates the social media website and mobile application known as Reddit, where the defamatory posts were published. The confidentiality of the information requested from Reddit is not absolute and the John/Jane Doe(s) have no reasonable expectation of privacy in relation to the use of the internet for the purpose of publishing defamatory and abusive statements.”

The order goes on to say that there is no other process to obtain the identifying information of the users who made the posts.

The school board is seeking: “all data, information, names, email addresses, IP addresses, records, and other sources that in any way relate to identifying and contacting Reddit users responsible for the posts.”

For anyone curious about the comment in question:

Not sure about past corruption. But there is plenty currently taking place at the Lakehead Publc School board. Sherri-lyn Pharrand took over as director in sept. Her first act was to create a $160000 a year superintendent job for her best friend, whom she created a superintendent job for at the dryden school board when she went there as director a few years ago from her job as superintendent at LPS. This wasn't a replacement. It is a brand new job that didn't exist before. She also created 2 more very expensive and pointless management positions a month later, For certain people. Sherri- Lyn and her best friend Jane lower ( her lapdog mentioned earlier) just returned from an "educational conference" in Chile. This while they have yet to even begin the local negotiations with C.U.P.E ro ratify the contract they signed with the province 3 months ago. The board owes roughly 160 C.U.P.E members about $1500 a peice, that they couldn't care less about dealing with. Only money for senior management at the LPS. Sherri-Lyn has just recently canceled all weekend school rentals (sports, birthday parties, groups, etc.) As she claims they have used up the while yearly budget already. So no one in the community can now use the public school buildings on weekends because Sherri-lyn Pharand needed the money to create upper management jobs for her closest cronies. That's just what I'm privy to, I'm sure there is more.

Ohh... it was also Sherri-lyn Pharand who made the human rights complaint against Ian Mcrea, the Director who just retired and was going to rum for trustee. I guess Sherri-lyn didn't want the past director watching over her decisions

I encourage everyone to repost this in any thread about this story.

Sue me, Sherri-lyn.

Hasn't Reddit fought cases exactly like this in the past and won?

Lakehead School Board just guaranteed that these posts will get a hell of a lot more attention now. Nice job.
