Is it me, or does it look as if this dog is grieving (like dog knows what this symbol of the soldier means)? I find myself hoping dog got past this loss

Here is a higher quality version of this image. According to here:

Gunner, a yellow Labrador and improvised explosive device detection dog with Golf Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, accompanies Marines as they pay their final respects during the memorial service for Cpl. Conner T. Lowry here, March 10, 2012. Lowry died March 3, 2012, in Kajaki district, Afghanistan.

According to here:

Cpl. Conner T. Lowry, an ammunition technician chief and fire team leader with Golf Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, fires rounds at an enemy 1200 meters away using an M39 rifle here, Jan. 17, 2012. Lowry, a 24-year-old native of Chicago, put 19 rounds through a two foot, square hole in the wall, or ‘murder hole,’ where an enemy fired at the Marines. Lowry died March 1, 2012, in Kajaki district, Afghanistan. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Roger W. Malcolm)

Edit: To be clear the sources are Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. I'm not familiar with that organization and want to be upfront.

One of the most pointless wars US fought. Right after giving Russians a war they could not hope to win in hostile Afghan mountains.

I’ll never understand the logic behind invading a land known to be graveyard of civilizations, with an example of costly defeat of USSR in living memory.
