Mat Piscatella of Circana (previously NPD Group) has revealed that Final Fantasy XVI has performed ‘fine’ in terms of sales, following widespread reports that the game didn’t meet expectations at Square Enix and had done less than stellar numbers.

Final Fantasy XVI has done… fine. No, it hasn’t sold the most ever of anything and no it isn’t a sales failure. It’s done fine. For some reason this has completely broken some fans’ brains.

Final Fantasy XVI sold three million copies during its first week, which is an impressive figure no matter which way you slice it. In late July, Square Enix said that the critically acclaimed RPG had sold relative to the PS5 installed base amidst concerns that the game had underperformed.

However, Square Enix later admitted that the RPG did not meet its high expectations, putting the blame on the slow adoption of the PS5. Final Fantasy XVI has been a bit of a polarising entry among fans due to its direction, although the creator of the series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, has said that it’s the ‘ultimate fantasy.’

Final Fantasy XVI was released for PS5 on June 22, 2023, and you can read our full review here.

I've never seen a main Final Fantasy game so quickly forgotten.

Man. I fell off that game so hard. First few hours were fun, then got so boring. Wish I could’ve refunded it.
