An Indiana man is dead after a grenade discovered in a grandfather's belongings detonated.

According to a post from the Lake County Sheriff's Department, officers responded to a call of an explosion before 6:30 p.m. Saturday night in the community of Lakes of the Four Seasons.

The family was looking through their grandfather's belongings when they found the handheld explosive device and it went off.

"Someone reportedly pulled the pin on the device and it detonated," Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a statement.

Responders found an adult male unresponsive at the scene, and he was later declared dead.

The man's two children — a 14-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman — were wounded by shrapnel and transported to a nearby hospital.

According to the FBI, some families have unexpectedly found explosive devices in the belongings of their parents or grandparents who were military veterans. Some veterans brought back explosives as souvenirs from World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War.

Authorities say anyone who finds a grenade or other explosive ordnance should move away from the device and call 911 immediately.

I’m from a small town in north Alabama that saw a decent amount of action in the Civil War. Nothing on a grand scale, but the town was sacked by union forces and there were small battles and various skirmishes throughout the area. The cotton field behind my house growing up was at one time an encampment for the union army.

My great great uncle found a civil war cannonball while plowing in the ‘50s. He, in his infinite wisdom, painted it green and used it as a door stopper for years. It wasn’t until the 80s he realized the cork stopper was still in and it was live. They took it somewhere (idk where) and got it emptied out I guess and it’s been in our house ever since.

The deceased is 47. Not clear if it’s his grandfather or father. Because there’s 2 generations of victims there’s 2 possibilities for “the grandfathers stuff “

Grandfather puts him in WWII era. Father puts him in Vietnam.

Always call the bomb squad if you come across something like this. There’s a bot on whatisthisthing that pops up to tell you to do so because so many people find grandpa’s unexploded ordinance.
