True story. I pulled one of these out about 20 years ago to show a friend. The batteries had corroded and left gunk on the touch points. He said "A little baking soda and water will fix that."
My daughter, seven at the time, took the Game Boy and soaked it in a sink full of water and baking soda. We only found out the next day.
