Fun facts: This began as a Carolingian church as early as 814AD and was consecrated by pope Urban II in 1096. The romanesque church had been begun sometime before 1170 atop the existing church masonry. In the 13th century it was continued in the gothic style. The cathedral wasn't finished until 1500. In the 16th century, Renaissance decorative elements were added to the Gothic structure. The seventeenth century saw the reconstruction of the spires. Restoration work began in 1803 and continued into the 19th and 20th century.
