Sorry for whoever had to experience this tragedy, but good pic.

I took this picture with my phone (Pixel 6xl Pro) after a residential structure fire during the winter storm that hit the Midwest US right before Christmas. The house was a loss (occupants got out--no one was injured) and an excavator had been called in to knock down what little was still standing. I grabbed this image through the remains of a window frame right before this was demolished by the excavator (thinking about it now I wish I'd used that to frame the image). As a photographer I often try to find beauty in sadness, and with this image it occurred to me that sometimes the sadness is the beauty.

A little background: I'm a volunteer firefighter and have been doing fire scene photos for several years. I never take pictures of victims or identifying information as a matter of respect and privacy. I'm not a fire scene tourist. All of the local area depts know who I am, and know that the photos I take are generally going to be of crews working (I usually take my DSLR on calls, but I'm always a firefighter first and photographer second).

Fantastic picture. I’m on my way to buy a grand piano, then burn my house down just to try and recreate it.
