I lost my mom as well. Separately, due to a fire, I thought I lost most of her pictures. I recently discovered a hoard of pictures of her I never knew existed. I hope this isn’t the only one of your mom either

This photo is the only professional family photo we ever took and the last photo taken of all of us together, about a year before the fire. We never had money to get family portraits done, but my grandparents paid for this one.

As for the fire itself, it was Christmas, 1984 and I was 12 years old. We were very poor. I lived with my mom and step-dad and younger sister in a really old, run-down 3 room house. My mom loved Christmas and over-decorated every year - that year, she plugged too many plugs in the wall and the old wiring couldn't handle it and in the early morning hours of Christmas day, the wiring caught fire inside the wall and quickly consumed the house. The firemen told us my step-dad died in his sleep and my mom died crawling towards her bedroom door, likely of asphyxiation.

Luckily, my sister and I went with my dad to visit my grandparents the night before, or we would've been lost, too.

Here are some takeaways after 38 years without my mom:

The pain never goes away, but it gets easier. Take TONS of pics and video of your family and friends and back them up to the cloud, and share prints with friends. I only have a handful of images of my mom and only a few with me and her, and only because a few friends have given me photos they've kept over the years. If you live in an old house, pay the money to have the wiring professionally inspected. Even if you're poor. Put a fire extinguisher and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors in every room. Eat a lot of sushi. OK, that's just what I like to do, lol. But seriously, when it comes to your family, don't hold grudges, don't yell at each other and don't be afraid to tell someone you love them.

The goal of this post isn't to bring the mood down, but to remind everyone to take care of the spaces around them, to love the people around you and to always hold on to the memories. Plus, it was such a nice surprise to get this photo that I wanted to share with everyone.

Thanks for letting me share. :)
