I took this in Lisbon, Portugal a few months back. I'm not sure why but I really like it.

It looks and feels cozy. I love these sort of walkable neighbourhoods with shops and buildings close to each other. There's also fewer cars driving by at high speed causing noise and air pollution.

You like it because the composition turned out very pleasant, even if it was by accident. Look how the tracks curve into the negative space between the buildings which makes your eye follow upward to the blue of the sky even as the tracks turn downward down the hill. That gives the picture movement.

Look how the yellow, blue and pink of the buildings compliment the beige of the sidewalk and the gray of the asphalt and the bright mustard of the trolley. Different colors but the same tone. That is pleasing to the eye.

Look how the straight lines of the buildings juxtapose against the curves of the road and the tracks and seem to whirlpool directly into the center of the image. That gives it an overall balance that would be missing if it was all straight lines or all curves, or if one overwhelmed the other.

Look how tiny splashes of bright color, like the orange store canopy, red flowers, and the deep green of the shrubs subtlety pop out and bring life and energy to the scene.

This is a nice picture; it is pleasing to the eye and the mind.

It’s because there’s only one car in sight. It’s amazing how modern cars can make even the most attractive sights seem ordinary.
