I am in Greer South Carolina on business and the nearest cafe near my hotel was a place called Barista Alley. I went in and did my usual. I always order a double espresso for here and a pour-over to go. I do this at every hipster cafe I visit no matter what city I’m in. I usually like to rate places in my head and I take notes for my journal of exceptional cafes. By the way, their espresso was VERY good.This sergeant is behind me and asks me about me and where I’m from and we chat for a minute. He tells me which pour-over to order (the Honduran beans) and I go and sit down. I look up and he’s making my coffee.I go up and he says they let him make the coffee himself and he has all of the same equipment at home and it’s his only hobby outside of policing. He didn’t think I’d mind if he made mine. I said “sure in exchange for a photo” and I grabbed my camera.It was a very good cup of coffee. Sergeant Wilson, thank you.

The coffee culture in upstate South Carolina always puzzled me the whole time I lived there. So many excellent coffee shops in a place most people would expect to find only hicks
