In all his profound wisdom, Elon Musk has said that "almost anyone" could afford to buy a $100,000 ticket to Mars.

It's no secret that Elon Musk is planning to build a self-sustaining colony on Mars in the coming future. But don't fear, as the richest man on the planet believes "almost anyone" can afford a ticket. If they only try.

Speaking to Chris Anderson from TED on Monday, the 50-year-old was quizzed on the price of the landmark journey and whether it could cost a few hundred dollars.

Musk acknowledged that the economy would play a part, but he emphasised that he wanted as many people as possible to have the option.

"If moving to Mars costs, for argument's sake, $100,000, then I think almost anyone can work and save up and eventually have $100,000 and be able to go to Mars if they want," he said. "We want to make it available to anyone who wants to go."

He mentioned possible avenues of accumulating the funds, including selling homes, being sponsored by the government and even taking out a loan.

In the same interview, the father of two also revealed he is technically homeless.

"I don't even own a place right now, I'm literally staying at friends' places," he said. "If I travel to the Bay Area, which is where most of Tesla's engineering is, I basically rotate through friends' spare bedrooms."

He must be saving his coin for a rainy day.

Talking about the response to billionaires from the general public, Musk emphasised that: "For sure, it would be very problematic if I was spending billions of dollars a year in personal consumption, but that is not the case.”

"It's not as though my personal consumption is high,” he said.“I mean, the one exception is the plane, but if I don't use the plane then I have less hours to work."
