I always wondered why the CCP made a big deal of keeping this quiet, after all, they put down a bunch of protesters harshly which is typically the message they wanted to convey. It was only recently I heard it was due to the fact that the local troops wouldn’t go against the protestors and they had to bring in troops from other areas. That’s what they were afraid of, the people would find out. (Looks like China is off the travel list for me now)

I was in Tienanmen Square a year before this...Went on a school trip to China in 1988.

1989 was a crazy year. The Lockerbie bombing was still in the news, Japanese emperor Hirohito died, Exxon Valdez oil spill, Tienanmen square, Ollie North (Iran Contra) trial, Hurricane Hugo, Jim Bakker Trial (I grew up in Charlotte so both of those were big news), Berlin Wall falling, etc. Crazy times.
