Former nurse here. It's not in your lung. It's between your ribs and your lung and is designed to help keep your lung inflated. Otherwise any air that may leak out of your lung (presumably you had surgery) could get trapped between your rib cage and your lung and it would gradually make your lung space smaller compromising not only your breathing but also the blood flow thru your lungs on the way to your heart. Usually it's the blood flow issue, not the breathing that'll get ya.
