A friend at work had a wonderful golden retriever. His family would take a long vacation each year, plus a few long weekends. We would watch the dog. He would just come to our house and mingle with our dogs. Such a treat as he was a great dog. Never expected to be paid for it, certainly never asked for anything, yet they always gave us something. Usually it was a little cash and some treats from their trips.
Point is, they loved their dog and were so thankful that he had a nice place to go when they were gone, they went above and beyond what they needed to do. We would have done it for free, and told them that, didn't matter.

"On Saturdays you need to let the dogs out every 2 hours and feed them every 4 hours, but you can't work all day because I don't want to pay you for a full day. Just come in every 2 hours. Also, when you take them out and feed them you need to actually run, you need to be in and out in 15 minutes even though you have to let out 40-ish dogs, I want to spend as little money as possible"
