We have such an annoying HOA, yet whenever I go on walks I always see litter on the fucking street, what are y’all doing if not making the neighborhood nicer??

Had friends that bought into an HOA. On the road going into their neighborhood there was a house that wasn't part of the HOA. The HOA demanded that the owner paint his home (currently nice but a slightly different shade of off-white) in the same approved colors. Even took him to court over it. They lost. He then painted the house a bright blue color. Couldn't miss it.

Ran a landscaping/property maintenance crew for several years in college and grad school. The absolute worst clients were the HOAs.

We ran a pretty professional crew, we maintained lawn-seating and landscaping for an A-list concert venue, shopping centers, theaters, parks, factories, offices and a bunch of other commercial properties, but far and away the only properties that caused us trouble were the associations.

Nothing but constant complaints, additional requests, pushback on invoices, etc. Our work was never up to par for them. We would literally be followed by people who had nothing better to do than observe my workers the entire time and make lists of grievances. They’d perform these surprise “audits” to ensure we were using the right mower blades and trimmer string. It was absolutely insane the level of pettiness those associations and board members were capable of. We had one association who wanted to cancel our contract because our equipment was too loud. Umm, yeah, they’re lawnmowers and small 2 stroke engines.

That taught me to NEVER buy into a home that was part of an HOA.
