Makes you appreciate BATMAN BEGINS actually taking the time to set up Gotham being so corrupt that the cops are the biggest gang

Batman works better when he's going after the rich and powerful

Time to defend my boy Bruce once again:

1) While I’m no capitalist and think billionaires are a problem, Batman is fictional so if you can suspend your belief enough to accept aliens and shit you can imagine an altruistic doctor that managed to make an honest billion. Furthermore, the Waynes actively fought to make the city better and a lot of the shiftiness and inequality come from their deaths. So I guess you can blame whoever was in charge of the fortune between the death of Thomas and Martha and Bruce’s adulthood.

2) Every. Single. Batman fight begins with him bailing on a charity ball. The dude invests in the city. Nobody wants to read a comic about philanthropy so that’s never the focus. I’m willing to bet that if you scratch stuff like the Watchtower or Hellbat, he actually puts more towards the city than being Batman.

3) Iron Man is a rich white capitalist that specialized in war profiteering. Stan Lee straight up said he was gonna try make an unlikeable character popular. But y’all never roast him.

4) While I’m not sure if there’s a comic equivalent to the TAS moment where he hired the ex con as a security guard who he apprehended as Batman, the fact that he adopted Jason who was a street rat who tried to steal his wheels shows he’s doesn’t go all out on victims of the system.

5) Concede that it’s slightly problematic that all his villains have mental health issues but Arkham is the one thing keeping them from the death row so gotta write the sequels somehow.

Fuck that whole Twitter thread pissed me off and I don't even like Batman.

Batman isn't going after the person buying the drugs. He's going after the dealers. Saying that he's "beating up the mentally ill" completely removed all agency from every villain in Gotham who purposely commits evil.

Batman's villains are either sociopaths, psychopaths, or somewhere in between. They get out of Arkham and return to their life of crime because it's what they want to do. They are ALL capable of normal interactions. The Joker MIGHT be the only one who qualifies as insane though. Possibly Two-Face. The rest are all completely sane individuals with a shtick.

The henchmen? Most of them are people who turned to crime because Gotham has so few opportunities to do things right. There's a story, I think it's in BTAS Comic, where Bruce Wayne says to one of the villain's henchmen "Leave him and I'll give you all jobs." Because Bruce Wayne is the real person trying to save Gotham.

Gotham is a comically terrible place. The only way to save Gotham is to burn it to the ground and start over. Ras Al Ghul was almost right in Batman Begins. Citizens of Gotham should basically all be relocated to another city and that place needs to fucking burn to the ground.

Except, trying to leave Gotham is hard. It's the same thing we see in real life where people can't escape from their shitty hometown. Moving is EXPENSIVE. Leaving for a completely different city? With possibly no job prospects? Near impossible.
