Whats the evolutionary purpose of tusks that grow that long? Seems like a hindrance. Or is that just some genetic abnormality?

Poaching and environmental issues make it rare for elephants to keep their tusks and live long enough for them to grow as long as they have for this elephant. She has been dubbed the "Elephant Queen" by wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas.
