Not a historian, no idea how true this is but Ive read that jesters served many important roles in the court. As well as basically being the TV of the medieval world (they weren't funny all the time, sometimes they had to be storytellers or magicians etc) but they were basically the only person who could, within reason as this shows, insult the king.
This served an important diplomatic role when if say the king had too much wine and insulted a foreign noble thinking he's funny, often the jester would pick up on the tension and quip back at the king turning his insult around, satisfying the offended noble and preventing war.
