Hearing things like this is a bit sad (coming from a freshman in college). Its like wanting to become a part of something bigger is universally frowned upon because you should want to go further and be more economically.
Whenever I'm overextending for an institution or workplace I always kept in mind that when I die they can replace me within a week but my love ones cannot. So spend your time wisely. Happy Thanksgiving
