Long lasting marriage ≠ happy, successful marriage.
Unfortunately, it was normalized to tolerate abuse in any form. So the divorce rates may have been lower, but I’m sure marriage satisfaction was too.

And then there's all those stories of old ladies in retirement homes confessing to their nurse that they killed their abusive husband 50 years ago because divorce wasn't a thing

A person I once knew got married while in high school. Had to have her husband sign a permission slip for a field trip in the late 70s
