When Jefferson beat Adams, it was the first time the presidency changed parties. It was a significant milestone, and respectfully done.
Adams wrote Jefferson a letter congratulating him, and gifted him presidential horses to pull his carriage. It was a nice gesture, but privately Jefferson couldn't stand Adams, and refused to use those horses on principle.
