Vermont senator Bernie Sanders has said he is "relieved" that president Trump's White House term appears to be coming to an end, congratulating the Democratic candidate Joe Biden, but warning that work is only beginning.

The progressive, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination this year, told ABC News today that a Biden victory could put an end to "pathological lying" from the White House and the Trump administration's threat to the rule of law.

"To me, this election was about many many things but the most significant thing was about whether or not we end the pathological lying in the White House and we end the danger of losing our democracy and the rule of law in our country, and thank God, it appears that we are going to end that danger," the senator said in an interview.

Sanders said it is still "looking very good" when asked if it remains confident of a Biden victory. Vermont was called in the Democratic nominee's favor, with Biden projected to take in 66.4 percent of the vote, compared to Trump's 30.8 percent.

But citing mass unemployment, systemic racism, healthcare issues and the impact of climate change, Sanders said he believed "our job is just beginning."

He said: "What Congress must do with President Biden is move aggressively... on an agenda that stands for working people and low income people and make that as bold as it possibly can be. There is a lot of pain in his country that needs to be addressed.

'I am very relieved. To be honest with you I haven't been sleeping so well lately. I was very worried about four more years of Trump. It appears that is not going to be the case so I feel exhilarated, I feel relieved but I know how much work we have to do."

Current projections suggest that Biden has amassed 253 electoral votes, while Trump has picked up 213. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the White House.

If a throw rug was elected as the next President, it would lie less than Trump...

Frankly, I'm used to lying in the White House. It's sad, but it is as it is.

What I'm not used to and will never get used to is the DoJ being a political tool. If he doesn't want his term to be just a temporary reprieve from wholesale dismantling of rule of law, he will need to appoint a ruthlessly incorruptible bloodhound for the AG.

What a terrible website. They should ban links from this, it has nothing but glitches and adverts that don’t lead to a relevant video.

Here’s the video.
