I was in a health food store looking for a special vitamin supplement for a friend. One of the bottles was silica gel.
Some people eat silica gel supplements.
I think they're marked do not eat because they're not intended to be a part of the food product, not because they're dangerous.
My kid ate a pack of it once too. Called poison control and told she would be fine.

Silica gel packets are 100% safe to eat. They say not to because they are a choking hazard. Source: Poison Control.
