Joe Biden has won the state of Wisconsin in a significant blow to Donald Trump’s chances of re-election.

Mr Biden overtook the president in the battleground state earlier on Wednesday, securing a lead of more than 20,000 votes.

The Associated Press declared former Vice President Biden the winner shortly after 2pm Eastern Time. Fox News has also called Wisconsin for Mr Biden. "Huge win," Fox host, Brett Baier, told viewers.

The AP called Wisconsin for Mr Biden after election officials in the state said all outstanding ballots had been counted, save for a few hundred in one township and an expected small number of provisional ballots.

The Trump campaign has requested a recount. Statewide recounts in Wisconsin have historically changed the vote tally by only a few hundred votes; Biden leads by 0.624 percentage point out of nearly 3.3 million ballots counted.

“Biden has won more votes [than] any [other] prez candidate in WI history,” Ben Wikler, chair of Wisconsin’s Democratic Party, said.

“Folks: Joe Biden just won Wisconsin.”

Mr Biden is currently leading in overall electoral votes with 237, compared to Mr Trump’s 213. Candidates need 270 electoral votes to win.

The rust belt state, along with Michigan and Pennsylvania, is a major battleground with 10 electoral votes.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Mr Biden told a drive-in rally that he was confident the Democratic Party could win Pennsylvania.

“We’re going to win Pennsylvania,” he said. The state’s results are still coming in and it could take until Friday to know the final tally.

Mr Trump won all three rust belt states in 2016 in a shock turn of events for then Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

In Wisconsin, Mr Trump beat Sec. Clinton by less than 1 per cent.

Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin and Michigan. That's all he needs. Still has a chance in Georgia and Pennsylvania as well

this is a perfect example of why it's so important that all votes are counted.
