Decades ago in the early 70's, someone tried to rob my grandmother as she was walking down the street in Philly - coincidentally, she was also a Winifred. She had one of my uncle's paychecks tucked into her purse for deposit at the local bank, so flat out refused to let it go. She pulled that purse back in toward her, grabbed the guy by the shirt and told him, "I know your mother young man and if you don't let go of my purse, I'm going to have my husband and every one of my sons (note: she had 5 sons) waiting at your house for you tonight and they are GOING to take it back." Guy was so shocked by her response that he just let it go and ran away.

Fun fact; it turns out, she really did know his mom and where they lived. So when he got home from work, my grandfather and all 5 uncles stopped over the house after supper to have a quiet chat with him about keeping his hands to himself. That was the last time anyone in the neighborhood gave my grandmother an ounce of trouble.

I asked my one uncle about it before he passed away and he told me that when they got there, he was the one who had to knock on the door, since he was the smallest of the boys, they decided he was the least threatening. Told the guy's father he needed to have a word and was told the kid wasn't available. He said, as respectful as he could, "sir, he tried to take my Mom's purse today outside the bank. I really don't want to have to go in an get him, but me and him need to talk about this". Fuckin guy's dad saw red and walked back inside. Chucked his own son outside by the collar onto the porch and then he shut & locked the door on him. Apparently, the kid had a pretty bad drug problem and the dad had had about enough of the BS.
