Americans in general don't think the government is there to take care of their personal lives, rather provide defense and the absolute basics, like other people trying to kill you.

It's a totally different mindset that lots of redditors don't seem to understand. Some people in other countries are proud that their government gives them things. Lots of Americans are proud that their government does not.

I did some work for LEGO and had to travel to their head office in Billund, Denmark. I mentioned to our contact there how strange it was that there were no fast-food restaurant in the town. He laughed and said, it's because of their high wages, fast food doesn't do well without cheap labour.

Living in the US I never worried about travel insurance. It wasn't until I moved to Canada that I found out that Americans don't have to worry about travel insurance because health care everywhere else in the world is actually cheaper, and that the insurance companies don't mind paying less if you get sick abroad.
