Baldur’s Gate Sells Over 1 Million Copies in a Week

You’d think that selling an early access release at full price would put people off. Normally, you’d be right. But not for Baldur’s Gate 3, the much anticipated sequel having sold over 1 million copies in it’s first week on Steam alone. This according to SteamSpy, who confirm that despite the £49.99 price tag, the partial release from developer Larian Studios has already surpassed this monumental target.

Currently Baldur’s Gate 3 players are free to explore Act 1 in it’s entirety, but this alone can see players invest upwards of 50+ hours and not even finish the available story. Not bad for a game not set on full release until 2021. SteamSpy confirmed over 58k concurrent players yesterday, with over 4 million views and almost 20k comments on the 50 odd videos uploaded to YouTube last week. With over 50 videos released yesterday alone, it seems this number is set for exponential increase over the coming weeks.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s graphics are tentacool…(sorry not sorry)

At time of writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 has received 3 Hotfix updates, aimed at overall stability improvement and to prevent crashes experienced by some players. Yet despite the inevitable bugs, reaction to the release has been overwhelmingly positive. There are currently over 13k reviews on Steam right now, with the majority choosing “very positive”, holding the setting, tone and story telling in particularly high regard.

So pick out your paladin, dig out your dice and dial up your Dungeon Master, Larian Studios have rolled a nat 20 with the Baldur’s Gate community. Who needs a full game anyway?

This is huge for D&D games on PC. Thank god, we needed this.

As someone who started out pc gaming on the Baldur's Gate/Ice-Wind Dale series I just have to wait till this is finished before I play. I was tempted to buy in but I will have to wait. Good for them though on the success.

Wow. I guess the demand for a good story driven epic rpg is pretty high now. Plus the previous success of Divinity: Original Sin 2 (DOS2) probably drove this pretty hard. Well cheers to the success. Here’s hoping it turns out well!
