I once played a campaign in DND sorta like this. Everyone wanted to go fight the litch king at level 3, except for the bard who cried when they all got there. The litch took pity on the bard and kept him to keep them company, and killed everyone else. And that was the story of my new campaign, with a level 20 bard helping the litch in the final battle.
