My dumbass has been buying bay leaves when there's a bay tree outside my front door. I've lived here over a year.

Make sure that you Pick and Dry them in a jar before cooking with them, won't harm you but they can be bitter otherwise

While that could be laurus nobilis (Bay Tree), it could also be umbellularia californica (California laurel) or litsea glaucenses (Mexican bay leaf) or cinnamomum tamala (Indian bay leaf). They can also be used for cooking but could have different flavor profiles. I thought i had tons of bay trees in my backyard but they are really California laurels and don't taste quite the same. Much more intense, pungent, almost acrid compared to the laurus nobilis

When I was around five years old, I was eating home made spaghetti at my baby sitter's house when I found a bay leaf in it. I didn't know what a bay leaf was at the time and my five year old brain thought it was a leaf from out in the yard and I surmised that the spaghetti must have fallen into the grass and been scooped up. I refused to eat there for months after and I wouldn't tell anyone why because I didn't want to hurt the baby sitter's feelings.
