I'll never forget when I was in high school our cat disappeared for a year without a trace we were devastated and then one morning before school I heard him meowing in the hallway. Got to stay home that day and laid down on the kitchen floor while he chugged some water and purred all day cuddled up to me. Give him some extra love today im sure he needs it !

My first cat did that. Came waltzing back to the house seven months later, fatter than when he left.

He was possibly picked up by other people, but then returned the moment he could escape.
Or he just went on a 5 month adventure to “find himself” again after being neutered
P.S. he might be back for the sole purpose of revenge.
