Senator Duckworth was a U.S. Army pilot whose helicopter was hit by a rpg fired by Iraqi insurgents. Despite losing both of her legs in the 2004 attack, she sought and obtained a medical waiver that allowed her to continue serving in the Illinois Army National Guard until she retired as a lieutenant colonel in 2014.

When you are a double amputee and get prosthetics, do you get to pick your shoe size for the feet or do they just give you the size you previously were for balance purposes?

Duckworth and Obama have been friends for awhile: when this picture was taken, Duckworth was head of the Illinois VA.

She would later be tapped by Obama as an Assistant Secretary in the federal VA before running for the House and then Senate
