I'm a Canadian teaching English in Korea, and sometimes when I'm keeping track of points in a game or something, I'll use the counting system on the left. When they get their fifth point, there's frequently outrage because they interpret the fifth slash through the four existing lines as negating those points. Even very young children interpret it this way. Interesting how even tiny cultural differences can be so ingrained.
I've had to learn to not use check marks on tests too since checked answers are typically wrong, and right answers are circled.
