Protests in Belarus: a chronicle of events

Belarus held presidential elections on August 9.

According to official CEC data, Lukashenko received 80.1% of the vote, his main opponent Svitlana Tikhanovska – 10.1%, the other three candidates were supported by less than 2%.

Thousands of Belarusians who disagree with the election results went on strike, clashes with security forces, and a political crisis erupted.

Lukashenko is being demanded to resign, the largest protests in the post-Soviet period are taking place in the cities, and workers at key industrial enterprises have gone on strike.

Since the night of August 9, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus, almost 7,000 protesters have been detained in various cities of the country. On August 13, they began to be released from detention centers.

Mr Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that the situation in Belarus is being shaken from the outside and has agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin to react jointly “in the event of an aggravation of the situation in terms of external threats”.

On August 19, EU leaders agreed to impose sanctions on Belarus in response to the rigging of the presidential election and the use of violence against protesters.
