Ok, with all the weird explanations did nobody read Goethe’s Faust? The man facing us is Mephisto (the devil), the woman is Gretchen (or Margarette), which through her love to Faust (the protagonist) or better explained through his seduction loses her family and later on her mind. She gets incarcerated for killing her child (the main theme of “Faust”, as Goethe wanted to ask how much forgiveness a child murderess should get). Both Characters Mephisto and Margarette form a duality in the storyline, he being the devil, her being highly religous and an innnocent but both being an innfluence to Faust like his light and dark side.

Edit: ... the statue is even called Mephistopheles and Margaretta
