At 4:31 AM, an unauthorized photo taken of Stalin inside of the Kremlin shows the very moment he was informed that Germany had began their invasion of the Soviet Union. It was taken by Komsomolskaya Pravda, editor in chief. He was ordered to destroy it, but instead saved it. June 22, 1941.[720x1003]

It’s always strange to see these people, who tried incredibly hard to maintain a perfect public image, acting so normal.

I've always been unsure about Stalin at this particular moment. Because I've read that the German build up was completely obvious and the British were passing on all intelligence that pointed to invasion but he refused to believe it. But I also thought that Hitler's aim to invade the USSR was common knowledge and that the pact the two countries came to was on the Russian part a chance to buy time whilst they built up.

So was he a narcissist who refused to believe he'd been duped? Or a worried man who knows they are not ready to face the onslaught?

Fantastic picture either way
