This was the original concept for Toph. The original design was repurposed into Sud, Roku’s earthbending teacher.

Also, u/Bombkirby is right. ‘Toph’ from the play is not exactly the original concept, but an exaggerated Toph combined with the original concept.
Toph was originally going to have be a teenaged blind boy. Sud, Roku’s instructor, the earth bender in ATLA’s intro, and Bolin all got pieces of that original concept.
I figure it's either that, or that Toph's ability was so terrifying to those she beat that their memory of her kinda warped into something as terrifying as possible.
