These are called dendrites. It occurs when a liquid saturated with other ingredients begins to solidify. The x pattern occurs because the equilibrium composition of the solid is different than the liquid and the liquid has to eject solutes in order to solidify. This results in dark and light areas and little arms that are as far away from each other as possible.
