As a 40yr old, I have friends who will accomplish this in ten years, and those who will need to work until the day they die.

Yep. I was always taught that retirement is a function of money not time

I was set to retire at 55. Divorced. It'll be closer to 70 now.

Edit. I should add some context. Married for 23 years, never saw it coming, then it all fell apart. No cheating or anything nefarious.

We lived in a no fault jurisdiction and it was an arbitrated settlement, so legal fees were minimal. She got half of everything, and I pay child and spousal support.

I’m almost 50. I figured this out too late. One of the things I’m happiest about i impressing the importance of investing in 401k to someone younger guys at work. One of the dudes told me he had listened to what I said a few years earlier and had since been putting 15% of his check in (work matched an additional 8%). He almost has one year of salary saved up. He was excited. He said he never saved anything and now he’s got that much, he’s all in. Dude actually made some life decisions early and is sticking with him.

So at least somebody else won’t find this shit out too late.
