The Golden Girls was ahead of its time...they tackled issues such as ageism, racism, homophobia; hell, Dorothy's brother had a heart attack and died while trying on formal gowns and was buried in lingerie, a masculine teddy to be exact.
It's funny, because Blanche and rose were meeting Dorothy's sons girlfriend's black family and the joke was that they mistook Blanche and rose for being in blackface even though they were on a self improvement kick that included facemasks.
It was a joke about blackface, but I didn't see it as offensive but it was a humourous way, during the episode to address the elephant in the room, which was that Dorothy's son was in an interracial relationship.
