I know we're all focused on the outfit, but the biggest thing we should all take from this is that West Papua is currently suffering under Indonesian military occupation. Those who are fighting for freedom are routinely kidnapped, jailed, tortured, and/or killed.

Indonesia is actively committing genocide there.

Please, don't let this get lost in all the jokes. It's not often Pacific human rights issues get a chance to be heard, so please, learn what you can.

EDIT: Thank you for spreading the word on this one. I'm a white Australian, so I feel like I don't deserve the internet points, tbh. So I'm going to direct you towards r/westpapua so that you can hopefully hear some West Papuan voices (or at least see some more stories about the situation), and if there's anyone who is from this community in this thread, please DM me so that I can signal boost any relevant posts or fundraising causes that deserve attention.

Also, to the Indonesians in this thread supporting the occupation and saying they have West Papuan friends who support it: instead of saying "they want to be part of Indonesia", start calling for a (safe, honest, fully and freely democratic) referendum so that the true will the West Papuan people can be determined, a right that was robbed of them through the "Act of Free Choice" event, whether that be to stay with Indonesia or to become independent. It's the right thing to do to let all West Papuans have their say on the future of their land and their people at the ballot box rather than to simply continue to crack down on dissidents.
