I read a book like this in elementary school, like the whole town took turns buying the family’s stuff for like a penny each and gave it all back to the family
My grandfather told me how he was at a police auction for recovered bicycles, about 1960, where some kid bid $1 on every bike. The kid would never raise his bid, just bid $1, and it didn't matter what bicycle it was. Eventually the auctioneer asked why he would bid $1 and no more and the kid said that $1 was all he had. The next bicycle that came up, the kid opened with $1, and the crowd was silent, so the kid could win a bicycle.
