I never hit my daughters. I felt like i would be teaching them that if they didn’t do what i wanted, i would hurt them and that is, more or less, what abusers do. They got time out and we had many a conversation, not just about what they did wrong but why it was wrong. If it was done to another person, i wanted them to think about how the other person felt. I also tried to punish them in away that sort of made sense, like my oldest stuck her sisters toothbrush in the toilet and i made her look up germs that are in a toilet and what they can do to people. She also got assigned to clean the toilet for a month and help her sister with her chores.

You know, all this talk about spanking reminded me of a story my dad used to tell because he thought it was just hilarious.

Apparently I acted up once when I was like 5, so he spanked me quite a few times with a belt. A few hours later I had to poop, but I couldn’t sit on the toilet to do it because my butt still hurt so bad, so I started crying because dammit I needed to go.

My dad liked to mock/mimic my crying when he’d talk about it years later. He couldn’t stop himself from laughing his ass off at the memory of his tiny 5-year-old daughter sobbing her eyes out because he’d beat her beyond functionality.

"Don't hit your brother! I will now hit you repeatedly to teach you not to hit people!"
