Utah needs this with the LDS church, they practically run the government in that state.

Isn't this wall already in our country's founding documents? I literally had a conversation about this last week when a coworker didn't believe separation of church and state exists.

Thomas Jefferson wrote that the American legislature shall "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." These are know as the establishment clause and the free exercise clause.

Republicans love the free exercise clause (at least for Christianity). This is the part that keeps the government out of religion. Under this clause you are free to practice your religion without fear of persecution or retaliation from the government. The government can't pass laws the prohibit you from practicing your religion.

The part most Republicans fail to mention is the establishment clause. This part keeps religion out of government. This means the government can't enact laws based on religious principles. And yet issues like abortion, gay marriage, even something as small as keeping "under god" in the pledge of allegiance are all steeped in religion. "Two men can't get married because it goes against the Bible!" Well the Bible shouldn't be a factor when writing laws for the entire country!
